Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a kart racing game. It has the same game play as other games in its genre such as Mario Kart and Konami Krazy Racers. In the game, players will raced through different themed race circuits from a number of Sega franchises. As you race along the circuit track, you will have the opportunity to collect the power ups which can significantly increase your speed. The power ups can also be used to block the opponents. Players can earn more power ups through drifts or performing midair tricks. There are four types of vehicles that are used in the race circuits including racing, off road, bike and hovercraft. Due to the terrain on the race circuits, the vehicles will either be assisted or hampered by the surfaces which they drive on. For example, race vehicles can do well on hard surfaces but be hindered by soft terrain such as mud and snow. As you progress through the game, you will get to earn Sega Miles which can be used to unlock additional features in the game including characters, and tracks. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing has twenty four race tracks which is based on locations from different game such as Sonic Heroes, Super Monkey ball and Samba de Amigo.

The background music that is played throughout the game are derived from the old and new tracks of the Sonic video games franchises. However, the game also has original songs by various artists including Richard Jacques. In the beginning, the course only has one track. As you earn the Sega Miles, more tracks will be unclocked. The MIDI tracks in the Nintendo DS platform are composed by Allister Brimble and Anthony Putson from the Orchestral Media Development. The main theme song in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is So Much More†that is originally sung by Bethley Jones.

At the start of the game, players will get to choose from 8 different players including Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy Rose, AiAi, Amigo, Bill Hatcher, Miles, Dr. Robotnik, and Shadow the Hedgehog. Other characters can be unlocked through Sega Miles.
