There are several possible reasons for the xbox 360 red light and a few quick tricks you can try to fix it yourself. Fix your Xbox in little over an hour.
The first thing is to make sure your xbox is flashing with 3 red lights and not four. The four red lights is a problem with the audio and video cable connection. Make sure the audio cable is well plugged in the xbox and that the audio and video cables are correctly matched to your TV's inputs.
The red light or "red ring of death" is as Microsoft describes it a "general hardware failure". Of course this isn't very helpful in determining the cause of the problem, but one of the most common causes of the 360 red lights are overheating. If this is the case, here is what you should do.
Again, the first and foremost reason for the 3 light errors may be overheating, the system must be cooled. The Cooling system has already failed and you need to cool your Xbox manually. So, once you are locked with the 3 red lights problem in your 360, simply switch the Xbox off and keep the console in a cool place for 1 hour or so. Unfortunately, this method will not allow you to play for nearly 2 hours! Because you cannot stop playing after the unit gets heated up, and then plays again once it is cooled. There is no use in following this method and this kind of cooling will not be a permanent fix in this case. Even some games cannot be cleared up by this method.
Another thing to look at is the power supply. Sometimes it is as easy as this. The power supply does not provide enough power to the xbox. Make sure your xbox 360 is plugged in a dedicated outlet and not in a shared power bar.
Beyond these simple fixes, if your xbox 360 is still experiencing the 3 red lights your options are to send your unit in to Microsoft for repair which can take up to 4 weeks, or you can buy a new unit.
Here are some other problems with sending the xbox to microsoft to be repaired. You have to wait for nearly a month for getting your unit to your home. This method further involves the shipping cost to the Microsoft office. This takes away your waste expense. Even there may be a chance of losing some parts of Xbox 360 while shipping. Last, this method is obviously applicable only if your 360 is within your warranty period!
Another thing you may want to consider if you have xbox problems is to do it yourself. If you do a search on the internet, you will find that there are many resources and manuals that teach xbox repair. Check them out, as you will find that many of them can give you simple fixes.
