U.S. video game sales fell 6% in June because of a light slate of game releases during the month.
U.S. sales of videogame hardware, software and accessories for the month fell to just over $2.2 billion from $2.3
billion a year prior, according to market research firm NPD Group. Analyst Anita Frazier said she expects the
release of Sony Corp.'s (SNE, 6758.TO) Move and Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Kinect motion controllers to spark consumer
spending.
Later this year, both Sony and Microsoft will be releasing motion controllers for their respective video game
systems in a bid to capture some of Nintendo Co.'s (NTDOY, 7974.TO) success with its popular Wii.
Take-Two Interactive Inc.'s (TTWO) "Red Dead Redemption," which sold nearly nearly 1 million units in its second
month on the market, remained the most popular title. It is the top-selling game of the year so far.
However, "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11" by Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS) was a notable disappointment, selling only a third
of the number of copies last year's version sold in its introductory month. The title didn't break into the month's
Top Ten list and was beat out by games such as Walt Disney Corp.'s (DIS) "Toy Story 3" and THQ Inc.'s (THQ) "UFC
2010: Undisputed."
NPD's data didn't capture a new add-on sold for Activision Blizzard Inc.'s (ATVI) "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2"
because it is only sold over the Internet. NPD only tracks the performance of brick-and-mortar retail. Some analysts
say that suggests NPD's data might miss the industry's overall performance.
"We think that online game play will continue to be a drain on gamers' time and wallets," Wedbush Morgan analyst
Michael Pachter said in a note to investors.
Points and subscription cards were also the top-selling accessory type for the month, NPD noted, breaking nine
straight months in which controllers led the pack. Point and subscription cards are often used to purchase game
content outside traditional retail channels.
In hardware, Microsoft's Xbox 360 pulled in its biggest non-holiday sales month, with 451,700 units sold.
"Hardware sales saw a notable uptick from May on an average sales-per-week basis, and all three current gen[eration]
console systems saw unit sales increases over last year," NPD's Frazier said.
