Are Playstation 1 games playable on a Playstation 2?

I'm a little bit old-school when it comes to video games and I'm getting my first Playstation 2 soon. If PS1 games can be played on a PS2, I was planning to get rid of the first one.

So, can they?

dude if i was you u would save up a little longer to get a ps3 for these reasons
1 it has better games and graphics
2 it can play both ps1 games and ps2 games on it
3 it has online play
4 it plays blue ray and regular dvds

even if it takes you w while to come up with the money it is worth it

personally i dont have a ps3 but my cuz does and there frekin awesome
