As with the previous instalments of Modern Warfare, the plot of the game is a modern-day World War II setting. The original Modern Warfare began the storyline with a civil war breakout in Russia. In the second instalment, a terrorist attack takes place in Russia and is erroneously blamed on the US, leading to an invasion of the United States by Russian forces. Modern Warfare 3 takes the player into a world crisis, where Russia has extended its invasion into Europe.
